Spread over an area of 1.75 square kilometres and founded in 1957, Guwahati Zoo, officially known as the Assam State Zoo, is the largest of its kind in the North East and located on the R. G. Baruah Road in the city of Guwahati, Assam, India. It is close to the Guwahati railway station, and one and a half hours drive from the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. The zoo is located in the natural and sylvan environment of the lush green Hengrabari Reserved Forest. The animals included are the Asiatic lion, the royal Bengal tiger, the one-horned Indian rhinoceros, the Himalayan black bear, the stump-tailed Macaque, the Hoolock gibbon, a varierty of avifauna, reptiles and other wild animals.
