Udaipur is a part of the royal Indian state of Rajasthan, extending from latitude 270 42’ in the North to longitude 750 33’ in the East. It is well connected through air, rail and road links to other important cities of India viz., Jaipur, Delhi and Mumbai.

By Air

The city is connected by regular flights to Delhi, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Aurangabad, and Mumbai.

Udaipur has its own airport, Maharana Pratap Airport, located near Dabok 25 kms from the city. It is connected to Jaipur, Jodhpur, Aurangabad, Delhi and Mumbai. From the airport, you can hire a private taxi to reach the city.

By Rail

Udaipur is on the Western Railway meter gauge network. Trains such as the Chetak Express and the Mewar Express connect it to Delhi, Chittor, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Ajmer, and Jodhpur.

Udaipur railway is a part of the web of western Railway.The railway station of Udaipur is only four kilometer from the city center. As you get down from the train you will find yourself transported to a different world, you can find the hills forming a great backdrop to the city. The Chetak express connects Udaipur to Delhi via Chittor, Ajmer and Jaipur.

Though the Udaipur Railway Station is located a little away from the city, there are frequent train connection Delhi, Ahmedabad and Mumbai.

By Road

Udaipur is on National Highway No. 8. Transport corporations of several states such as Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh operate buses to Udaipur. The main bus stand is on the City Station Road from where one can take buses to most of the other important tourist destinations of Rajasthan as well as western India and northern India.

Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation runs buses within the state of Rajasthan and to the neighbouring states of Gujarat, Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharastra. It has a total of 5000 buses in its fleet. RSRTC operates express, super-deluxe and air-conditioned buses, the reservation facilities are available at various locations. RSRTC operates buses at Mount abu hill station too. Computerised reservation facility is available at the central bus stand in Jaipur. At head office Control Room telephone number 5116024 passengers can record their suggestion / complaint round the clock.

Udaipur is located on NH8, which links Delhi to Mumbai via Jaipur and Ahmedabad. If you’re driving down from Delhi, you would probably need to halt a night at Ajmer or Pushkar. Rajasthan Roadways also provides the services of Deluxe and air conditioned coaches to reach Udaipur.

Good motorable roads connect Udaipur with major cities in India.

Arrival and departure

Airport (25 km), take a taxi from here. Indian Airlines (Tel 410999) at Delhi Gate near Tourist Bungalow. Jet Airways also flies daily to Udaipur (Tel no. City office: 523223). By rail direct from Ahmedabad (9 ¼ hrs) or Delhi (17 hrs), but see Chittaur, and Agra (via jaipur 12 ¾ hrs). Udaipur is on National Highway 8 and is well connected by road network. Jaipur is 4-6 kms away while Mount Abu is 187 km away

Getting Around

The Old City is to the east of Lake Pichola. The city wall is hardly seen, but many areas are still known by the gate names of yore: Suraj Pol, Hathi Pol, et al. The City Palace sits on the east bank of Lake Pichola, with its back towards it. The tourist hub is to the north of City Palace. Fateh Sagar Lake is further north. The train station and the bus stand are just outside the Old City, to the south-east. The airport is 25 km from the city centre to the east. Autos here don't run on meter and the minimum fare is Rs 20-25. An auto for the day should cost Rs 300-350. The taxi fare for the day should be Rs 1,000-1,100. There are numerous travel agents around the city centre, and it's best to compare rates or ask your hotel to arrange a taxi
