This industrial town lies about 135 km from Madurai and is the state's second largest natural harbour. Once occupied by the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British, the elegant Sacred Heart Cathedral and Church of the Lady of the snows still stands. This is also a major industrial centre with thermal power stations, spinning millas and salt extraction units. Pearl fishing is another commercial activity here.
