Location

Thiruvananthapuram, the southernmost district of Kerala state is situated between the north latitudes 80 17’ and 80 54’ and east logitudes 760 41’ and 770 17’. The southernmost extremity,’Parasala’ is 56km away from Kanyakumari, the "land’s end of India". The district stretches along the shores of the Arabian sea for a distance of about 78 km.

By Air

Needless to say that this capital-city of Kerala is well-connected to the major cities of India as well as with the neighboring countries. There are direct flights to Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi. Cities in the neighboring countries such as Colombo, Malé, Singapore, and cities of Arabian Gulf are linked up by the international airlines.

Thiruvananthapuram International Airport (6 km from city) has over 30 airlinks with convenient connections to Colombo, Maldives, & the Middle East. Indian Airlines and Jet Airways operate domestic flights all over the country from here.

By Rail

Trivandrum is connected to the important cities of Kerala as well as of India by trains. Train service is available and frequent for the neighboring states of Tamilnadu and Karnataka.

The headquarters of the district administration is at Vanchiyoor in Thiruvananthapuram city, 1.5 km from the Government Secretariat and the Central Railway Station. The district administration is headed by the District Collector. He is assisted by Five Deputy Collectors holding charges of general matters, land acquisition, revenue recovery, land reforms and election.

A large section of this railway was in Meter Gauge, compared to most of Indian Railway being in Broad Gauge. The main improvements currently in this railway are to convert all tracks to Broad Gauge, improvement of stations, platform covering, better catering stalls, and an automated signal system to avoid accidents. The single Chennai Central station handles a million passengers every day. Five stations, Chennai, Tiruchirapalli, Madurai, Palghat and Thiruvanathapuram are scheduled for upgradation in 2007.

Railway passengers at the Central Station here will no longer have to queue up at the information counter to check the arrival and departure timings of trains. A new LED (Light Emitting Diode)-based five-line display system was commissioned at the Central Railway Station

There are direct trains from Thiruvananthapuram to all the main towns in Kerala as well as the major cities in India.

By Road

You can take the road-route as the city is conveniently linked up with cities like Kollam, Alappuzha, Chennai, Ernakulam, Trichur and Madurai.

The long distance bus station is located next door to the railway station. Buses ply to all major towns and villages in the state as well as with the big cities like Cochin, Bangalore, Kozhikode, Coimbatore and Chennai. The city bus stand is located 1 km away at East Fort, near the Padmanabha Swamy Temple. Both state-run and private short distance buses connect the various important urban and suburban centres. City bus depots are also located at Peroorkada, Vikas Bhavan, Pappanamcode, Kaniyapuram and Vellanad

Long distance buses operate from the central bus Station at Tampanoor, opposite the Railway Statiion. Short distance buses operate from the City Bus Station, East Fort.

Travel Direction

Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is located at Valiyathura, 6km from the city and has flights to Middle East, Male and Sri Lanka from as well as direct flights to Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi. Thiruvananthapuram is also an important railway terminus on the southwestern coast. The main railway station is the Central station located at Thampanoor with regular trains via Kovalam and Ernakulam to Thrissur. There are daily trains such as the Parasuram Express, Malabar Express, Cannanore Express and it is connected to Kochi by the Venad Express, the Kerala Express and the Vanchinad express. It is also connected to other cities in India, including to Jammu Tawi by the Himsagar Express which goes via Delhi. By road, Thampanoor is the main bus terminal in Thiruvananthapuram. Kerala State Transport buses connect Thiruvananthapuram to the rest of the state and to Tamil Nadu. There are services to Kollam, Allapuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kanyakumari, Thekkady. Tamil Nadu State Transport have services to Chennai, Madurai, Pondicherry, Coimbatore, Nagarcoil and Erode.
