Tourist places in and around TirunelveliAround TirunelveliKrishnapuram (12 km)The Venkatachalapathy temple is known for rare sculptural workmanship. There are two beautifully carved elephants adorning the entrance to a mandapam, known as Veerappa Nalck Mandapam. The pillars here bear images of exquisite beauty depicting scenes from Puranas.Kuttalam (Courtallam) (56 km)The charming health resort amidst Western Ghats is popularly known as the ‘Spa of the South'. In all there are nine cascading waterfalls and the water is said to have great recuperative power. The best time to visit is from June to September. There are also innumerable temples and shrines in and around Kuttalam. Madurai (160kms) and Thiruvananthapuram (112kms) are the nearest airports for Kuttalam. The nearest rail head is at tenkasi, just 6kms away.Mundanthurai Sanc (45 km)This fine sancruary in the mountains near the kerala border was established in 1988. The rockey peaks and forested hill are a safe haven for a rich and varied wildlife. Key fauna includes, langur, Nilgiri langur, lion tailed macaque, sambar, chital, sloth bear, leopard and tiger. Best season – Sep to Dec.Tenkasi (55 km)The pilgrim centre known as the ‘Kasi (varanasi) of the south' is famous for the temple of Lord shiva. It has a flag staff, which is said to be over 400 years old. |
