Road
East Coast Road from Chennai to Pondicherry is a scenic drive. The later stretches are on well-maintained state highways. Night buses are comfortable and numerous; only ST buses during the day with infrequent direct connectivity. Kumbakonam (7 hrs from Chennai) makes the better bus hub Rathi Meena Travels (Tel: 04362-271853) runs sought after deluxe services from here.There are two bus stations in the south part of the old town, near the junction of Hospital Road and Gandhiji Rd-TTC bus stand and the Municipal (State) bus stand. Regular buses depart from the local Municipal bus stand to Kumbakonam (1 hr) and there are buses to Tiruchirappalli.6
There are several state and private buses that ply daily from Bangalore, Chennai, Madurai and Tiruchy. The journey from Bangalore and Chennai takes about 7 hours and there are over-night buses.

Rail
Thanjavur Junction. Rockfort Express runs daily from Chennai's Egmore Station (10 hrs). Also connected to Mysore by daily Mysore-Thanjavur Express (14 1/2 hrs).Thanjavur Junction Railway Station is one of the main stations in Tamil Nadu. It is on the Chennai-Tiruchirapalli metre gauge rail route. Regular train services are operated to cities such as Tiruchirapalli, Madurai, Nagore and Chennai. Cholan Express, Madurai-Thirupathi Express, Rameshwaram-Chennai Express and Thanjavur-Chennai Passenger are a few that halts at the station. The major railheads close to the station are Pudukkottai in the south (57 km) and Nagapattinam in the east (79 km.)
