Thane (Thana) was the terminus of the first railway in India built from Mumbai in 1853. It was an important Portuguese trading center until the Marathas captured it in 1739. Thane originally known as 'Sristhanaka' ( residence of Lord Ganesh) is the district headquarters of Thane district in Maharashtra. Located to the north of Mumbai, the city surrounded by hills and lakes is divided into two by the Thane Creek. It has several historical buildings, including a fort and several churches. Now it is a booming industrial town with growth in trade, transport and construction activities.
