The village at Sonamarg (Meadow of Gold) is at the head of the Sindh valley. The drive up from Srinagar ranks with the best in the world; fertile farmland, snowcapped peaks, mosty- blue forests, waterfalls, and nomadic herdsmen are all here. The River Sindh meanders its way along the route and you could take a break at any spot. Take a detour and visist some enchanting temple ruins at Naranag. Sonamarg makes a good trekking base (as long as you take all supplies with you). Amarnath is only 13 km uphill from nearby Baltal. Take a pony ride to the Thajwas glacier and get mystified by the colours of nature.
