Puri - The hallowed seat of the Hindu religious deity Lord Jagannath. Puri is a city in the east Indian state of Orissa. The city is famous for its Jagannath temple which was built in the late eleventh century. Puri is one of the oldest cities in the eastern part of the country. It is situated on the coast of Bay of Bengal, and is a popular beach resort. Puri as known to the Hindus all over the world is a holy town located on the eastern coast of India. Besides being a religious center, Puri is also known for the good stretch of the white sand beaches on the banks of Bay of Bengal.
Puri enjoys a special place of pride as one of the four "dhams" of holiest Hindu pilgrimage sites in India. Lying on the shoreline of the Boy of Bengal, Puri is embraced by serene beaches. Puri is home to Lord Jaganath (Lord of the universe), Subhadra (his sister) and Balabhadra (his brother). Religious life in Puri is defined by the great Jagannath Mandir and its much worshipped Rath Yatra. The district of Puri encompasses most of Chilika Lake, Asia's largest freshwater lake.
