The architecture of the city has remained almost intact since those days. The old buildings and massive stone gates conjure up images of empires long gone. The temples on the bank of Krishna River are worth a visit as they are well preserved and magnificent in their timeless splendour. On the outskirts, the athletic tourist will be thrilled to know, are five hill forts. Kamalghat Fort, at 5,411 ft, is probably the most interesting. In the Sahyadris at 4,400 ft ASL, 23 km from Mahabaleshwar.
