Old Delhi - पुरानी दिल्ली |
|
Delhi lost importance for a time under the Mughals as Akbar, Jehangir, and Shahjahan preferred Fatehpur Sikri, Lahore, and Agra for their capitals. In 1639, however, Shahjahan began construction of the city popularly known now as Old Delhi, more properly Shahjahanabad. This, popularly referred to as the seventh Delhi, was a walled city of which the Red Fort was both citadel and palace. Several of the city gates and fragments of the wall still survive.
