Mumbai is located on India’s central-western coast along the Arabian Sea, and is the largest city in India. Road
Both private operators and the state government run long-distance buses regularly to and from Mumbai. Depending on where you want to travel to, private long-distance buses depart from Dr. Anandrao Nair Road, near Mumbai Central, from MG Road, just south of Metro Cinema, from Dadar TT (just under the flyover). There are regular services to Pune, Ahmedabad, Aurangabad, Mahabaleshwar, Goa, Nasik, Shirdi, Kolhapur among many others. In case there are AC Volvo's plying to your destination, we suggest you take those; the drives will be a lot much more comfortable.Travelling in Mumbai is a bit of problem. It is majorly affected by distance and exceeding population. Seeing the chaotic situation, Mumbai government came out with a best solution possible.
National Highways No. 3, 4,6,8,9 and 17 radiate from the city.
Bus Stand
Interstate bus terminal is near Mumbai CT.Both private operators and the state government run long-distance buses regularly to and from Mumbai. bus from the Air India/Indian Airlines building on Nariman Point: international(1 hour), domestic (45 minutes), but allos twice these times morning and evening. Returning to town the bus will drop passengers in Colaba. Offical stallsat the airports will fix you up with a black and yellow taxi at a fair price.

Central Mumbai is one of the major regions of Bombay and encloses region like Crawford Market through Mohammedali Road and Kalbadevi to Mumbai Central Stattion and the fast growing commercial areas of Lower Parel.
Railway

Central Railway from Mumbai Victoria Terminus (VT), now officaly Mumbai CST, to Delhi (27 ½ hrs); Kolkata (32 ½ hrs); Secunderabad (14 ½ hrs) for Hyderbad; Chennai (31 hrs, but from Dadar 24 hrs): Vasco da Gama (24 hrs) for Goa.

Tourist quota reservations for VT departures, from window 22 in thecomputerised booking centre at VT, can only be made within 24 hrs of departure time except for Indrail Pass holders. A few trains also leave from Dadar, check carefully.
Air
The Chhatrapati Shivaji airports -- two of them -- one for domestic and other for international airlines connect the city to important cities and towns within and outside India. A lot of international airlines fly to Mumbai, for those that don't you can hop onto a domestic service from your point of arrival.International (Sahar) and domestic (Santa Cruz) terminals at same airport but quite separate. Mumbai is served by many internatonal airlines which have their own offices or representatives in town, deatails from tourist offices, Indian Airlines flights al over India. The Indian Airlines office (Tel 202 3031) is on Nariman Point. Indian Airlines connects Mumbai to most cities in India. Jet Airways (Tek 2854384) and Air Sahara (2835671) fly to Mumbai various cities. The airport terminals are difficult to reach on public transport, best to take the airline

Water
This service applies only to a few places. You can hop onto these boats/ ferries to go to Alibag, Murud Janjira, Mandwa, Elephanta caves and other places across the coasts of Konkan. Mumbai is being linked through a seaway, but the work is a few years from completion, once this is done, you can use the waterways to get around Mumbai and its suburbs.Local Transport
Taxis. There are no cycle rickshaws or scooters in downtown Mumbai, only taxis which are quite reasonable (and the drivers usually very good about using the meters). Mumbai also has a car hire system wheels, Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Kedia and Autoriders offer cars on rental, either for self drive or driver-driven options.Mumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (MEST) run an extensive and efficient bus service which is not too crowded outside rush hours. They publish a guide to these services which incorportates an excellent city map, Ltd (limited) buses make fewer stops.
Commuting in Mumbai is very easier due to the excellent Suburban Electric Train which connects South Mumbai with the far flung northern supurbs. Train rund from 0430 and 0130 daily. Suburban trains run from Churchgate to Mumbai Central Terminus, Dadar, and Mahalaxmi for racecourse; from Mumbai Victoria Terminus to Byculla for Victoria Gardens, on to Dadar, and Neral Junction for Matheran. The Indrail Pass is valid on these services, and there are first class compartments. Main line tickets into Mumbai Central Terminus include the trip down to Churchgate.
It is fun to hire a Victoria (horse and carriage) in the evening.
