  • October -March.

    The best time to explore Mumbai is between the months of September and April, when the weather is relatively dry and cool. From June to September the skies open, sometimes with catastrophic results - the floods of 2005 killed nearly a thousand and left thousands more homeless. During the monsoon season, ferries to Elephanta Island and beyond stop, and trips to Sanjay Gandhi National Park and the forts and cave temples around Mumbai are often impossible. YOu might also want to avoid the months just before the monsoon breaks, when temperatures can top 40 deg C (140 deg F).

    Climate

    The climate of Mumbai is cool and pleasant between Novembers to February. Average temperature is between 18 deg C to 29 deg C. The lowest has been 70 deg C. Rainfall occurs during the months of June to August. The average annual rainfall is about 2200mm, and rest of the months are hot and humid, where the temperature from 27 deg c to 33 deg C. The highest temperature recorded is about 42 deg C, and the average annual humidity is around 90%.

    Best Time to Visit

    Mumbai has something to offer throughout the year but September through April is usually a good time to visit. Not only is the otherwise humid weather bearable this time of year, there is also a range of activities to choose from. September is when Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations peak with the immersion of the idols. Towards the end of the year, there is a spate of cultural festivals that include theatre and film festivals, jazz festivals and classical music and dance festivals. Vacationing here in the summer heat of May can be challenging as also in the monsoon when the city is lashed with continual rain and suffers flooded bylanes and traffic jams.

    Mumbai has humid, tropical weather throughout the year. December to February is usually pleasant. The minimum temperature at this time rarely goes lower than 12 deg C. May is the cruellest month with temperatures soaring as high as 38 deg C, followed by the monsoon when rainfall averages upto 2200mm (85in) between June and September. The mercury rises once again in October before a mild winter sets in around December.
