Manali Travel - Nearest Airport, Station and driving distances


Location

Manali is loated at 32.160 N and 77.100 E. It is situated at an altitude of 1,926 metres and is spread over an area of 12.5 Sq.km.

How to reach

Air

The nearest airport to Manali is that of Bhuntar, which is 52 km from Manali. From Bhuntar one can take a taxi or a bus to Manali.

Rail

The nearest railhead is that of and this narrow gauze railway station is 95 km from Kullu. The scenic beauty of Kullu while going to Manali can best be enjoyed on a bus or a taxi. It is better to take a taxi, which one can stop and enjoy the nature at will.

The nearest most convenient railhead is Chandigarh (397 km). The other nearest narrow gauge railheads are Jogindarnagar (166 km) with a change at Pathankot and Shimla (260 km) with a change at Kalka.

Road

The road to Manali passes through the picturesque valley of Kullu. The motorable roads to Manali connect the town with other major tourist places in Himachal as well as in the nearby states. At the Manali bus stand there are two booths, which do computerised reservation for buses. The reservations can be made one month in advance. Both private and state government buses are in service over here.

Manali is the NH No. 21. Motorable roads and regular bus services connect Manali to Delhi 570 km, Palampur 204 km, Dalhousie 374 km.

Arrival and departure

Airport at Bhunter, seee under Kullu. Buses from Shimla (occasional luxury bus, ask at the Tourist Office), Chandigarh, Dharamsala, Jogindernagar, etc. You can break the long Journeys in Mandi. Local buses run over the Rohtang Pass (May- September only) to Keylong and Udeypur in Lahaul and Spiti, and also to Leh in Ladakh.

Now that central Manali has become so much busier Westerners who want peace. Ole Manali or up Manaslu Nulla where there is plenty of accommodation, some located right by the stream. The Youtj Hostel is over the bridge and a short way along the road to Vashisht.

Manali is responding to the explosion in ‘home tourism’ by putting up dozens of hotels in the apple orchards that once surrounded the town.
