Access

Mamallapuram is 60 km from Chennai and connected by a good road that runs along the coast. It is also connected to Chengalpattu via Tirukkalukunram. There are bus services to Mamallapuram from Chennai and Chengalpattu. The nearest railway station is Chengalpattu while Chennai is the closest airport. Regular tourist coaches ply every day. Air

Meenambakkam Airport in Chennai, 52 km, is the closest airport. Pre-paid taxis are available from the Chennai Airport to reach Mahabalipuram.

Rail

Mahabalipuram has a good network of roads that connect it to Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu and Pondicherry.

Bus Stand

From Chennai (2½ hr, 60 km) private buses to Mamallapuram leave from Parry’s Corner (next to the High Court Building) at the intersection of NSC Bose Road and Popham’s Broadway. State buses to Mamallapuram leave from Broadway station. The #188, #188 A/B/D and K are faster buses, while the #19, #108B, and #119A take a little longer. Young boys hang around the bus stand to help you get on the right bus for a rupee or two. From the Mofussil bus stand, near Esplanade in Chennai, you take #19A, #19C, and #68 buses to get to Mamallapuram.

Road

Chennai Central, 55 km is the closet railhead, connected to Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai and other states in Tamil Nadu.

Railway Stations

The nearest railway station is in Chengalpattu (Chingleput), 29 km west of Mamallapuram and 60km south of Chennai. From there you can get a bus or taxi to Mamallapuram. If you’re coming from Chennai, it is best to take a bus to Mamallapuram.

Arrival and departure

60 km from Cheenai. Included in the temple tour from Chennai, but you can easily get there by bus. Also buses to Thirukkalikundram and Kanchipuram.
