Kota is also famous for a its unique cotton weave technique. Colourful Kota, a treasure house of history is set on the eastern bank of river chambal. It is said to be named after a Bhil chieftain Kota, who was defeated by Jait singh of Bundi. It is believed that Jait Singh raised the first battlement or the 'Garh' (fort of Kota) over the severed head of kota. During the 12th century, the Hada chieftain Rao Deva conquered the territory and founded Bundi and Hadoti. Today, the beautiful town has emerged as n important industrial and education entre and is a fine blend of traditions and modernity. Kota is also fmous for its Dussehra celebrations.
Rao Madho Singh, who was nominated as the ruler by the Mughal emperor Shahjahan, formed Kota in 1631 AD. The city is known for impressive forts, opulent palaces and splendid temples dating back over several centuries retain the past glory with an exciting contrast to the modern edifices and industries. Standing over the river Chambal is commanding 'Garh-fort Palace', dating back to the time when Kota was a part of Hada Rajput kingdom.
