Kochi Travel - Nearest Airport, Station and driving distances


Location

Cochin or Kochi is located on the southwest coast of India at 90 582’ N and 760 132’ E, spanning an area of 94.88 sq.km. The city is situated at the northern end of a peninsula, about 19km long and less than one mile (1.6km) wide. However, much of Cochin lies at sea level, with a coastline of 48km.

How to reach

Road

The government-run Kerala State Road Transport terminus is very near the Ernakulam Junction Railway station. You can get buses to all cities in Kerala from here. Private buses and long-distance luxury buses to Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Goa and other cities in India operate out of Kaloor Bus Station.

Kochi is linked by a pair of bridges with willingdon Island, which is connected to Ernakulam by NH 47A. Ernakulam lies on NH 47 and is well connected.

Bus services to just about everywhere including Madurai. The bus-stand is 1 km from Ernakulam Junction station. Kochi is well service by a network of national and state highways, connecting it to all major centres.

Rail

Ernakulam Jn.is well connected by rail. So you have decided to come to Kochi. But here, you will find yourself facing a small problem. The reservation counter at the railway station may say, sorry, we do not have trains to such a place. Do not feel lost, tell that that you need to go to Ernakulam. Kochi, is part of Ernakulam district in the state of Kerala, the God's Own Country. The city boasts of three railway stations: Ernakulam Town and Ernakulam Junction stations cater to the passenger needs where as the Harbour terminus has been degraded to a container terminus. There are regular trains to all parts of Kerala in addition to long distance trains to Chennai, Bangalore, New Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai.

Trains to Ernakulam from Mumbai (35 hrs), Cheenai (14 hrs), Mangalore (10 hrs direct, 12 hrs with a change at Shoranur), Ootacamund (12 hrs, change at Mettupaliyam), and Trivandrum (4 hrs). The station you want is Ernakulam Junction; Ernakulam Town is out of the way, and Kochi Harbour Terminal is on Willingdon Island.

Railway Stations

Air

The Kochi International Airport at Nedumbassery is about 30 km from the city and has daily flights to the Middle East and Singapore. Domestic flights to Bangalore, Chennai, Calicut, Trivandrum, New Delhi, Mumbai take off on a daily basis from here. The airport is built in keeping with the traditional temple architecture of Kerala. It gives a feeling that you are really in God's Own Country.

One of India’s recent International Airport, Kochi is connectedto Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Muscat, maki, Bahrain, Singapore and Colombo.

Besides Indian Airlines (Tel: 352065), Jet Airways (Tel: 369423) and Air Sahara also connect Kochi to Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi, Coimbatore, Goa, Kozhikode, Thrivanathapuram and Lakshadeveep.

Cochin Intl. Airport, Nedumbassery, 34 ks north of the town is well connected by important towns.

Water

Cruise ships to Singapore operate out of Kochi. Ships to Lakshadweep sail out of the port twice a week.

Local transport

Ferries run from the main jetty in Ernakulam to Customs Jetty on Fort Cochin and Mattancherry. Most details are posted in English, and staff are very helpful.

Arrival and ddeparture

Bus from Ernakulam to Kottayam (2 hrs) and you have only a short taxi ride to the jetty. The train is slower and the station a long way from the jetty. While in Kottayam, sample the banana fritters in the coffee house by the jetty.

Bus from Ernakulam to Alleppey (1 ½ hrs), and tehn the boat to Kottayam. From Kottayam there is a bus to Periyar, a lovely drive (4 ½ hrs), and trains to Trivandrum (3 ½ hrs). Train from Quilon to Trivandrum (1 ½ hrs) or Ernakulam (3 ¼ hrs).

Getting Around

Buses run by the state transport department and private operators are the cheapest, but not too high on comfort. Three-wheeled auto -rickshaws are the local favourite. Charges are per hour or per kilometer. Taxis and rental cars are good options.
