Gwalior - ग्वालियर

The city of Forts

Gwalior, the capital of Madhya Pradesh is well-known for its majestic fort. Modern Gwalior is divided into four sections: the Old Town, the New Town, Lashkar, and Morar-which is the cantonment area. Gwalior is the city of true royals, the Scindias. The city has been named after the hermitz saint, Gwalipa.

Gwalior was always an important city because of its strategic location on the Agra-Deccan main route. Hence many dynasties tried to claim this land including the mighty Mughals and Marathas. The ancient city of Gwalior is steeped in its past splendour. A multitude of reigning dynasties, the Pratiharas, Kachwahas and Tomars have left imprints of their rule, in this city of palaces, temples and monuments.
