VOC Park and Zoo (Amusement Park)

Named after the famous freedom fighter V. O. Chidambaram, the VOC Park is an interesting place to visit in Coimbatore, especially if you are accompanied by kids. For the young ones, the main attractions within the park include the aquarium, which has a good collection of different species of fish, a mini zoo, and a toy train for joyrides.

Agriculture University

The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University is one of the interesting places to visit in Coimbatore. Five kilometres away from the railway station, the university is one of the best institutions of its kind in South Asia. The university also houses a botanical garden which is the main source of attraction here. It is located towards the west of the city centre and is spread over an area of 300 hectares. The garden has a good collection of different species of flowering plants and trees.

The location was moved to Coimbatore in 1907 and the name was changed to Agricultural College which later, came to be known as the Agricultural University. It is 5 km away from the Railway Station.

Perur

This ancient Siva temple is dedicated to Patteeswarar and His consort Pachaninayaki. Perur is one of the six Thandava Sthalams. Here the Lord performed Ananda Thandavam. The excellent temple sculptures are worth a close look.

Its main claim to fame is the holy Perur Temple, one of the seven Kongu Sivalayams. The outer buildings of the temple were built by rulers of Madurai in the 17th century but the inner shrine is much older. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. One of the remarkable features here is the figure of a sepoy (Indian soldier) loading a musket carved on the base of the pillar near the entrance, wearing identical dress to that of the Aurangzeb's soldiers.

Perur Patteeswaraswamy Temple

Perur Patteeswaraswamy Temple built by Karikala Cholan is located 7 km west of Coimbatore near river Noyyal. Combatore has many Temples out of which the Perur Patteeswaraswamy temple is the most popular one. The temple upholds huge statues.

The shrine dedicated to Lord Patteeswarar and his consort Pachainayaki is said to be built by Karikal cholan about 1500 years ago.

This Temple is 7 km from Coimbatore Railway Station and was constructed by Karikal Cholan over 1500 years ago. There are shrines to the presiding deity Patteeswarar and his consort Pachainayaki and some elegantly carved sculptures in the Kanagasabai hall. Devotees flock to this temple in hundreds during the Panguni Uthiram festival, which is celebrated in March every year.

Marudhamalai

One of the reasons of the large number of devotees flocking the temple is that the residing deity Dandayuthapani is believed to have performed several miracles here. Thai Poosam and Tirukarthigai festivals are celebrated with great pomp and gaiety at this temple.

Here is a Muruga temple atop a 600-foot-high hill in beautiful surroundings. The Lord is known by different names like Maruduamalai Andavar, Marudachalapathi and Dandayudhapani. The waters in the Marutha Theertham and Snakecharmer.s Spring are said to possess medicinal properties.

About 12 km away from the Coimbatore railway station is the Marudamalai Temple of Lord Muruga. The temple is situated on the Marudamalai (Maaruda is the colloquial form of Marunthu, which means medicine and Malai means mountain) mountain and is one of the most visited temples in the region. This is because the presiding deity, known as "Dandayuthapani" is believed to have performed several miracles here.

Forest College Museum

Khadi Gandhi Gallery

The government of India set the Khadi Gandhi galley up in Coimbatore on July 15,1970. The gallery displays pictures of Gandhi right from his birth to his death. Separate cubicles are arranged for each phase in Gandhi' life, which pictures all major events that occurred in his life. There are interesting collections of rare photographs titled Journey through Harijan Life, Family, Friends, Independence Struggle, Jail Life and peace Talks.

Government Museum

The government initiated the museum in 1989. The museum is situated in VOC Park Road, which bears the remnants of the various tribes of the place. The museum is compartmentalised into five sections. Basically, it bears the fossil remains and age-old tools.

G.D. Naidu Industrial Exhibition The late Thiru G.D. Naidu was a born technocrat. He was a legend in his own lifetime. He had made invaluable contributions to automobile, electronics, mechanical and agricultural sectors. He had also established an Industrial Exhibition.

Siruvani Waterfalls

Thirty-seven kilometres to the west of the city is located the Siruvani waterfall and dam. One is left enchanted and spellbound by the panoramic view of the dam and the falls. And when you are there don't forget to taste the water of Siruvani, for the water of Siruvani is known for its minerals and taste.

It is located 30 kms. from Coimbatore via. Narasipuram village. It is a fine picnic spot for trekkers. A perrennial water falls is a major attraction here.

The sanctuary, situated at an altitude of 1,400 metres in the Western Ghats, is home to different kind of animals and birds like elephant, gaur, tiger, panther, sloth bear, deer, wild bear, wild dog, porcupine, flying squirrel, jackal, pangolin, civet cat and birds like rocket-tailed drongo, re-whiskered bulbul, black-headed oriole, tree pie, spotted dove, and green pigeon. The Amaravathy reservoir in the Annamalai has a large number of crocodiles. Annamalai also has many places of scenic beauty such as Karainshola, Anaikunthi shola, grass hills, waterfalls, dams and reservoirs.

The Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary is about 90-km from Coimbator and is situated at an altitude of 1,400 metres in the Western Ghats near Pollachi. The area of the sanctuary is 958-sq-km. An ecological paradise, this sanctuary encompasses a National Park. It has just recently been renamed as Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary.

This paradise for wildlife lovers is set at an altitude of 1,400 metres amidst the verdant western Ghats. The sanctuary is famous for its lion tailed macaque and Nilgiri langur. Other key fauna includes - elephants, gaur, tiger, panther, sloth bear, deer, flying squirrel, jakal, pangolin, civet cat and birds like rocket - tailed drongo, re-whiskered bulbul, black headed oriole, tree pie, spotted dove, green pigeon, etc. Amaravathy Reservoir in the Anamala is inhabited by a large number of crocodiles. It is the nearest railhead for visiting the sanctuary, while Coimbatore is the nearest airport. Best season February to June.

Top Slip is yet another splendid site in the annamalai Hills, just 37kms from Pollachi. It is endowed with splendid scenic beauty and is a popular picnic spot. Tourists are taken around the sanctuary on elephant back or by van from here.

About 20 km from Udumalpet on the Palani-Coimbatore Highway lies the Thirumoorthy Temple. The temple is situated at the foot of Thirumoorthy Hills adjoining the Thirumoorthy Dam. A perennial stream flows by the side of the Sri Amalingeswarar temple. The beauty of the area is enhanced by the waterfall nearby. One can also visit the Crocodile Farm at Amaravathi Dam which is just 25 km from here. The place is also being developed as a District Excursion Centre.

Bhavani

Called as Tiruveni of South India, the Sangameshwarar temple at Bhavani is situated at the confluence of the rivers Bhavani and Cauvery. The temple is an important pilgrim centre and has Lord Sangameshwarer with His consort Vedanayaki as its presiding deity. Legend has it that during the East India Company regime, William Garrow, the then Collector of Coimbatore and Salem districts, who had his headquarters at Bhavani, used to worship Goddess Vedanayaki. One night he had a dream in which the Goddess directed him to vacate his bungalow immediately. The moment he moved out, the entire bungalow collapsed. In reverence of this miracle, he presented an ivory cradle to the temple. The cradle is still present in the temple with his signature.

The Sangameshwarar temple at Bhavani is situated at the confluence of the rivers Bhavani and the Cauvery. This place is called as "Tiruveni of South India". It is an important pilgrim centre. It is picturesque locale in the Anamalai Hills. It is about 37-km. From Pollachi. This small town is an ideal picnic spot.

Black Thunder Amusement Park

The scheme is an outstanding example of engineering skill, and is located in the Anamalai range.

Triuppur

An important textile centre in Coimbatore district, it is also famous for hosiery products. Thiruppur is also closely associated with ‘Thiruppur Kumaran', one of the valiant freedom fighters. It is about 50 km from Coimbatore.

Hill Stations

Udhagamandalam, Coonoor and Kotagiri are situated in the Nilgiris in Western ghats. They are 98 kms and 70 km. from Coimbatore respectively. They are the most popular and oldest hill stations in the South. They are located at an elevation of 2,286 mts., 1,859 mts. and 1,984, mts. respectively. While Ooty's pride is the lake, the Botanical gardens and Dodabetta, the highest peak in the Nilgiris, Coonoor boasts of Sims park, law's falls, Dolphin's nose and Lamb's rock. Kotagiri has view points and sholas. Reaching Ooty from Mettupalayam by the Swiss Rack Rail Type mountain train is an unforgettable experience.

Palani

The temple of Lord Muruga is located on the Palani Hills. The presiding deity is Dandayuthapani. The idol is made of medicinal herbs, it is one of the six abodes of Lord Muruga and one of the major Pilgrim centres is South India next only to Thirupathi. An electrically operated winch takes the pilgrims to the top. It is 105 km. from Coimbatore.

Bannari

Located in the Periyar district, it is about 83 kms. from Coimbatore and 10kms. from Bhavanisagar. The Mariamman temple here is very famous and attracts thousands of Pilgrims.

Kodumudi

It is 40 km. from Erode and 105 kms. from Coimbatore. A special feature of this place is that shrines for Siva, Vishnu and Brahma are located in one temple complex. Siva is known as Muchukundeswarar, Vishnu as Veera Narayana Perumal. The temple is one of the important temples in Periyar district
