Coimbatore (Kovai), one of the fastest growing cities in India lies on the banks of the river Noyyal in the foot hills of Nilgiris. It has emerged as a major industrial centre of the south with over 50,000 small, medium and large industries and textiles mills. The first textile mill of Coimbatore was set up way back in 1888 and is now known as the "Textile Capital" or the "Manchester" of south.

Coimbatore is a major engineering-cum-textile center in Tamil nadu. It has an enviable location of being close to the Nilgiri mountain range and the kerala border, which is just a couple of hours, drive from here, Hill stations like Udhagamandalam and Munnar and Thekkady wildlife sanctuary are easily accessible from coimbatore. The district is also known for several ancient temples. In the city, there are shrines dedicated to Ratna Ganapathi, koniamman and Kamakshi. At Peelamedu (10 km), there is a Devi temple dedicated to Sri Akhilandeswari.
