Chennai Travel - Nearest Airport, Station and driving distances

Chennai is an international airport connected by several international airlines while the domestic traffic is handled by Indian Airlines. There are regular flights to several cities around the world from the International Terminal. There are also daily flights to all important centres in India from the Domestic Terminal. There are two major railway stations in Chennai. Chennai Central is the bigger one and connects the city by broad gauge as also broad gauge trains to all major cities and towns of India. The Egmore station is the starting point for both meter gauge and broad gauge trains proceeding to destinations within the state as well as trains to neighbouring Kerala. Chennai is also accessible by road from any part of India.

Location

Chennai is situated in South East India, at 130 N latitude and 800 E longitudes, in Tamil Nadu, on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. It is located on a flat coastal plain known as the Elastern Coastal Plains. The city has an average elevation of 6 metres (20 ft).

Road

Chennai is a gateway to south India and is well connected to the rest of the country by road. There are regular buses to Bangalore (331kms), Madurai (445kms), Tirupati (152kms).

Chennai is connected by the NH 4, 5 and 45.

Bus Stand

There are two bus services, inter city and inter state which are also known by the names Tiruvallur Transport Corporation and J.J.Transport Corporation. For long distances there are two main stands in the George Town called Express Bus Stand and Broadway. The inter city bus station called called Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) has the distinction of being the largest in the whole South Asian region.

Buses are not the best transport option and should ideally be considered as a mode of transport when nothing else is available.

Chennai is connected by good network of roads with all important places in Tamil Nadu and other parts of India. You may rent a car with private cab owners. Pre-paid taxis and airport coaches are available at airports.

Rail

Chennai's three stations- Central, Egmore and Tambaram - connect the city to all metros and to leading towns and cities in southern India. There are daily trains to Bangalore, Tirupati, Trivandrum, Hyderabad, and Cochin

By train from Kochi (12 hrs), Madurai (1 ½ hrs), Pondicherry (4 ½ hrs), Hyderabad (16 hrs), Kolkata (27 ¼ hrs by Coromandel Express, 32 ½ hrs or more for others), Mumbai (24 hrs), Delhi (34 hrs), and Goa (28 ½ hrs, change in Bangalore). There are two terminal stations, Egmore (metre gauge for the south) and Central (broad gague for most other destinations).

Railway Stations

The city has two railway terminals called Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore and trains ply to the suburban regions and the neighboring cities. The Metro Railway Transportation System (MRTS) provides means of commutation in various suburban localities.

The imposing building at Chennai Central Station has held pride of place in the city since its inception. This prestigious railway station has undergone many a change to make it more commuter-friendly. There are comfortable retiring rooms and baggage halls.

Egmore Railway Station is one major railway station in Chennai, the other being Central Railway Station. It is more than a halt station and is known to provide services to a number of cities and towns adjoining the city. Egmore Railway Station caters to the northern and western suburbs and several districts neighboring the city. The railway station, much to the surprise, features Indo Sarcenic building style. The railway station thus adds to the delight of architects and tourists who find it quite interesting.

Air

Chennai has an international airport at Meenambakkam with flight connections to the US, UK, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and the Middle Eastern states. Domestic airlines connect Chennai with Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Trivandrum, Bangalore and Cochin.

Airport, 16 km from centre, international as well as local flights. Trains and a bus service both from Egmore, the latter calling at the Indian Airlines office, 19 Marshalls Road.

Kamaraj National and Anna International Airports are situated at Meenambakkam about 20 km. from city. Can also be reached by suburban train services.

Water
