Road

The town of Badami is connected by road with Hubli, Bijapur and Bangalore (550 km). There are six buses to the towns of Bijapur and Hubli. It takes 4 hours to reach Bijapur and 3 hours to reach Hubli from Badami. There are four daily buses to Bangalore, which take 12 hours. The bus service to the nearby historical places of Aihole and Pattadakal is good. You can also take taxis to these places.

Badami has convenient road connection to several important places around it. We recommend Hubli (app. 100 Kms), which has a major Railway junction apart from being one of the important cities in Karnataka.

Bandipur is accessible by Road, either from Mysore or from Ooty (Tamil Nadu). It is at a distance of 215 Kms from Bangalore, 76 Kms from Mysore and about 70 Kms from Ooty. The best way of reaching Bandipur is either by your own transport, which is recommended, or government buses as no private buses go to Bandipur.

There are buses to and from Hospet (5 hr, three daily), Bangalore (12 hr, four daily), Mysore, Bagalkot, Gadag (2 hr, seven daily). Solapur (6 hr, four daily), Belgaum, Bijapur (4 hr, five daily), Hubli (3 hr, five daily), as well as frequent buses to Aihole and Pattadakal. To get to Hospet you can take a bus to either Gadag or Ilkal, and then take one of the frequent buses to Hospet from there. Badami Travels, near the bus stand, operates daily private buses to Bangalore.

Getting Around

If you have travelled to Badami by train, which you need to for a quick weekend trip, head west past Banashankari for Badami. En route, you will pass NH218 to your left, which leads to Hubli. The Mayura Hotel and Tourist Office is on this road. Continue straight and you are on Badami's main road. At Badami, turn right at Laxmi Vilas Hotel for the Agastya Tirtha Tank, at the very heart of the town. To the right of the tank, on the edge of a hill, are the cave temples. To its left is the Bhuthanatha temple and a footpath that leads to Mahakuta. To get to Mahakuta, Aihole and Pattadakkal by road, go back to the main road and turn right at Laxmi Vilas Hotel. Aihole, Badami and Pattadakkal require just one entry ticket to see all the sights in each town. Most of the monuments, maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, are open from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. A few open later at 9:00 am.
