Aizawl, the beautiful capital of Mizoram, with its lovely surroundings have been developed ideally to meet the inflow of domestic and foreign tourists. Aizawl in Mizoram is the largest city in the state, but still very remote. Perched atop a ridge, the houses and churches stand in stark contrast to the green hillside. In the centre of the town is the lively Main Market where locals meet foten. The majority of the residents have been convertedto Christianity by missionaries who first came here is 1891. Thanks to these missions and the schools they started, Mizoram has the second highest literacy rate in India. At the Weaving Centre in Luangmual, 7 km from Aizwal, you get a glimpse of the weaving tradition of the locals.
The attractive capital town of Mizoram is set on a ridge at an altitude of 4,000ft. above sea level, overlooking the lush green Tlawng River valley to its east, while to its north are the beautiful craggy hills of Durtlang. The Tropic of Cancer passes through this tranquil hill resort.
