The capital city of Tripura, Agartala is bordered by Bangladesh. Its lush tropical greenery is dotted by red brick structures. Dominating the city is the sprawling white Ujjayanta Palace. Built in 1901 in Indo-Saracenic style, the palace opulent includes a tiled Chinese Room with magnificent ceiling crafted by Chinese artisans. The Palace is now converted into the State Legislature. Tripura is renowned for its exceptionally fine cane and bamboo work.The Neermahal Water Palace is 55 km Agartala on an island in Rudrasagar Lake. This was the summer home of the former Maharajas of Tripura. Built in white marble and red sandstone, the fairy tale palace has a profusion of pavilions, balconies, turrets and bridges. Udaipur, 58 km from Agartala is renowned for the Tripurasundari temple with its distinctive Bengal style curved roof. Built in the 11th century, this place of worship attracts tourists and pilgrims alike.

Agartala, the capital of Tripura is bounded by low-lying hills on three sides and on the other side it opens up to the adjoining plains of Bangladesh. Maharaja Krishna Kishore Manikya who shifted the capital from old Agartala in 1850 chose the present capital town of Tripura. Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya (1923-47), the last king of Tripura had travelled extensively in India and abroad and did much to modernize his state including the establishment of an aerodrome in Agartala. Nobel Laureate, Rabindra Nath Tagore had on a number of occasions visited and stayed in Tripura. Tagore was a great friend of the royal family and his close relations had greatly influenced the royal family in the field of music. Both Sachin Dev Barman and Rahul Dev Barman, scion of the Tripura Royal family are well known personalities who revolutionized the Hindi music industry in Mumbai.
A number of lakes and monuments can be seen in different parts of the town. Among the many building and temples that dot the landscape of Agartala, Ujjayanta Palace dominates the skyline. Built in Indo-Saracenic style, it now houses the Legislative Assembly of Tripura. Agartala can be reached by air, road and rail. While a road or rail journey would take about 24 hrs from Guwahati, a flight from either Guwahati or Kolkata takes approximately 40 minutes. Agartala is about 8 km from the international border and 150 km from Dhaka, the Bangladesh capital.
