Swine Flu virus (H1N1) is causing an epidemic among humans in Mexico and has spread to neighbouring United States and Canada in the month of July 2009. From there it spread to Europe and other countries to which travellers from US had picked up the disease and communicated it to whoever they were in contact with.

Swine Influenza has affected India recently and is spreading gradually. Necessary medicines, test kits and precautions are available with the Government of India, and measures are being taken to limit the entry of the disease in India.

GOI advises all its citizens to defer non-essential travel to the affected countries.

Guidelines for testing of persons with flu like symptoms

...any person with flu like symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, cold, running nose etc. should go to a designated Government facility for giving his/her sample for testing for the H1N1 virus. After clinical assessment, the designated medical officer would decide on the need for testing. Except for cases that are severe, the patient would be allowed to go home...
