Come Rains and the copious outpour of water at the Palaruvi waterfalls, nestled inside thick forests on the high ranges off Thenmala in Kollam district, has once again started drawing crowds. Off seasonal or pre-monsoon, whatever may be the nomenclature applied, the lavish showers that lashed Kerala during the last fortnight is reaping a rich tourist harvest at the waterfalls. Palaruvi in the literary sense would mean a stream of milk. True to that, the water that gushes down a 300 feet high boulder to form the waterfall would make many wonder whether it is really water or milk. The water lavishly bubbles down with a white tinge and a hiss caused by a natural churning that gives it a milky hue, thus aptly christened Palaruvi.
After remaining dry for months together on account of the drought situation, the sight of Palaruvi brought alive by the rains is being celebrated by more than 2,000 visitors on an average every day these days. The bulk of those who arrive there with family to experience the Palaruvi spray are from Tamil Nadu. The whole location is quite safe for a family outing. The waterfall spot is always under the vigil of watchmen specifically posted there to ensure cleanliness and good behaviour. Women and children have a separate space to enjoy a bath under the waterfall.
Palaruvi Waterfalls 75 km from Kollam town Palaruvi which means "milky stream" makes its `milky way' down the rocks, falling from a height of 300 feet. The Palaruvi woods is a beautiful picnic spot. There are frequent buses to Ariankavu from Kollam.
