Kanchenjunga Trekking is very rich from the point of view of its natural beauty. After Mt. Everest and Mt. K2, Kanchenjunga is the third biggest peak of the world. The Kanchenjunga is situated in the eastern frontier between Nepal and India. It is 8586mt. high. This region was opened for trekking tourism only in 1988. The trekking in this area is relatively strenuous since the region is regarded as the most remote place of Nepal. However the presence of numerous wild animals, birds and flora in abundance make the trekking in this region very interesting and pleasant.

It offers close-up views of both the north and south aspects of the peak leading through lush valleys to alpine yak grazing pastures and some of the most remote rails in Eastern Nepal. The Sherpas inhabit the northern part of the Kanchenjunga region whereas the southern lower part is full of the ethnic groups such as Rai, Limbu, Magar, Tamang, Brahman and Chhetri.

This trek takes us from the tropical lowlands to the high glaciers and the surrounding peaks of Kanchenjunga, Kambachen, Yalung kang and Jannu. Starting with a descent through terraced fields and forests to the Tamur River, the trail passes through many villages before gaining altitude to alpine terrain around Ghunsa, Kanchenjunga Glacier, Lhonak and Pangpema (5,140 m), the highest point of this trek. We descend through a fascinating landscape and terraced fields to the trek end point - Taplejung.

Of the world's great peaks, Kanchenjunga standing third highest at 8,598m is perhaps the least known and the least visited. Astride the Nepal/Sikkim border in eastern Nepal and only a few kilometers away from Tibet, it lies in a most sensitive area with restricted zones declared at each approach. With Kanchenjunga being opened for foreigners to explore only since 1988, vast tracts of foothills and alpine country, which lies between the Arun and Tamur rivers are now waiting to be explored.

There are several approaches to Taplejung from Ilam which involves a full day drive through dirt road or by driving from Dharan to Basantpur and then trekking for several days to Taplejung. The trek can be shortened by taking a flight to Taplejung, which is the central hub for the region. The trails climb gradually along and crossing Tamur river, which rises from the snows of Kanchenjunga itself. Continuing along the Ghunsa river and crossing Ghunsa, a Sherpa village marked with prayer flags and gompa, where two trails from Kanchenjunga's southern flank join the northbound route, leads through rhododendron thicket and the forested area. Climbing further up, the long awaited Jannu Glacier and then Jannu (7,710m) or "Mystery peak" or"Peak of terror" finally comes into full appearance. Moving along the hilltop path and after reaching Pangpema (5,150m) the giant Kanchenjunga (8,586m) becomes visible. Huge, towering Kanchenjunga presents the crowning finale to this long trek. Return trip from Pangpema crosses mountain passes between Yalung Glacier and Kanchenjunga Glacier affording excursion around the north and south faces of Kanchenjunga. Two trails head south from Ghunsa to Ranze. The early route scrambles over loose snow covered rocks to cross Lapsang La (5,932m). The lower alternative traverses three passes with the highest Sinion La (4,800m). At Ramze, the gigantic Yalung Glacier enclosed by rocky crags and ice precipice appears. Visiting the Yalung Glacier, the next days' trek down to cobble stone streets of Taplejung by passing through rhododendron thickets, mountainside villages, terrace fields along mountain path are equally interesting.
