Assam
Assam is the gateway to the North-East and is dominated by the mighty river Brahmaputra that has its origin in Tibet. Indeed, a large part of the state is located in the narrow valley that the river has created over the ages. The state's population includes a startling mix of Dravidians and Aryans and Tibeto-Burmans. Assam is perhaps best known for two things: tea and the one-horned Rhinoceros, which is found in large numbers at Kaziranga National Park. The capital of Assam, is Dispur, a suburb of Guwahati in 1972. The uneven topography of the land, full of hills, plains and rivers might, therefore, have contributed to her name.
So long hidden behind red tape, Assam's beauty is a fact that defies imagination. The rarest of flora and fauna, blue hills and green tea, a bustling capital and black oil, it is a beauty that soothes even as it disturbs. Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan bound Assam in the north, Nagaland to the east, and Manipur and Mizoram to the south. In the southwest, Assam touches the borders of West Bengal and Bangladesh.
Majuli - the largest river island in the world is in Assam.
Jatinga where birds come in hundreds and die is also in Assam.
Take a look at the rare one-horned rhinoceros at the Kaziranga National Park; watch lush green landscape with flowers that are exquisitely beautiful like the Orchid; sit by the Brahmaputra river that has 120 tributaries or take up a water sport in the wide network of rivers; make a trip to Guwahati, to visit the Kamakhya Temple, or for the offbeat, visit the village of Sualkuchi, for Muga, a golden silk that’s only produced in Assam; make an excursion to Majuli, the world's largest river island and the center of Vishanava culture, or take part in the annual Angling competition at the river Jia Bharali.
