    Desert National Park is located in the Jaisalmer city of Rajasthan. Stretching in the Thar Desert, over an area of 3150 sq km, the park serves as the perfect example of the desert ecosystem. Desert National Sanctuary, established in the year 1980, is believed to be the largest sanctuary of India. The best place to witness the amazing flora and fauna of the park is the Sudashri forest post and the best time to come here includes the months of October to March.

    Desert National Park, Rajasthan, India, is situated in the west Indian state of Rajasthan near the town of Jaisalmer. This is one of the largest national parks, covering an area of 3162 kmē. Park is an excellent example of the ecosystem of the Thar desert and its diverse fauna. Sand dunes form around 20% of the Park. The major landform consists of craggy rocks and compact salt lake bottoms, intermedial areas and fixed dunes which are quite suitable for the chinkara to move at high speed. The blackbuck is another common antelope of this region. Its other notable inhabitants are the desert fox, Bengal fox, wolf and desert cat.

    Sudashri forest post is the ideal place for observing the wildlife of Desert National Park and is the most suitable in the entire 3162 sq. kms. of this park for watching and photographing the activities of the animals from behind cover.

    Birdlife in this sandy habitat is vivid and spectacular. Birds such as the sandgrouse,partridges, bee-eaters, larks and shrikes are commonly seen. Demoiselle crane and houbara arrive in the winter. The birds of prey seen here are tawny and steppe eagles, long legged and honey buzzards, falcons and kestrels. But the most outstanding of the avifauna is the great Indian bustard. This tall, heavy bird is an epitome of confidence and grace. It is good to see five or six bustards near Sudashri water hole.

    Flora

    The terrain of the Desert National Park of India is made up of craggy rocks, compact salt lake bottoms and inter-medial areas. Huge sand dunes, forming about 20 percent of the park, are one of the most distinguishing features of its landscape. The flora of the Desert National park comprises of Dhok, Ronj, Salai, Bear and Palm trees.

    Wildlife

    Blackbuck and Chinkara are the most popular attractions of the Desert National Park of India. The other animals that can be seen in the park Include Desert Fox, Bengal Fox, Indian Wolf, Desert Cat, Hare, etc. The reptiles found here consist of Spiny-tail Lizard, Desert Monitors, Sand Fish, Chameleons, Viper Snake, Krait Snake, etc.

    Bird Species

    Desert National Sanctuary of India is home to a rich variety of birds. Here, one can hope to watch Drongos, Blue-tailed Bee-eaters, Green Bee-eaters, Bush Quail, Indian Rollers, Great Indian Bustard, etc. The winter season sees a large number of migratory birds visiting the sanctuary, such as Larks, Imperial Sand Grouse, Eagles, Bustards, Sparrows, Demoiselle Cranes and Falcons.

    By Air

    The city of Jaisalmer has an airport, which remains open from 1st October to 31st March. The next closest airport is at Jodhpur.

    The railway station of Jaisalmer is well connected with the other key cities of the country.
