Balpakram, which has been, declared a National Park since 1987 is the land of scenic beauty, lying at an altitude of nearly 3,000 ft. above sea level, covering an area of 200 Sq km. It is a vast tableland of dense forest, teeming with wild life, undoubtedly one of the richest spot in bio-diversity in the country. Many rare and exotic species of flora and fauna some endemic to the area - many almost extinct very rare forms of wild-life found in the area had naturally evoked a lot of interest among the elite circles of naturalist, botanists and zoologist. 167 km away from Tura, the District Head quarter of west Garo Hills District, Balpakram can be reached by road only. There are however regular helicopter services from Shillong and Guwahati to Tura and road transport facilities, nearest airport and rail head is Guwahati in Assam which is 220 km from Tura.

This park has been established in the west Garo Hill district in an area of 220 Sq km. The nearest town is William Nagar about15 km. The railhead Guwahati is about160km from the park. The nearest airport is Guwahati which is 170 km from the park. The vegetation consist of tropical moist deciduous type. The predominant species is moist hill sal. Mammals found in the park are binturong, clouded leopard, leopard cat, wolf, sloth bear, elephant, loris, serow, Reptile found is python. The birds are hornbill, hoolock etc. October to May are the best months for visiting the park.

Nokrek National Park

This park is also located in the west Garo Hills District. Its area is 68 Sq.km. The nearest town in Meghalaya from the park is William Nagar about 60km away. The railhead is at Guwahati about 200 km from the park and the nearest airport is also at Guwahati at a distance of 210 km. The forests of the parks are tropical semi-evergreen and moist deciduous.

Mammals found in the park are capped languor, clouded leopard, leopard cat, fishing-cat, golden cat, Pangolin, wild buffalo, elephant, serow and tiger. Reptile living in the park is python. Birds found are hornbill, peacock, pheasant, hollock etc. October to May is the ideal season for visiting the park.
