Chanderi, located 40 km from Lalitpur on the Delhi-Bhopal rail line is a well known mediaeval town dotted with gigantic monument fortification and cultural heritage scattered throughout the length and breadth of its environs. The historical data and archaeological evidences yield that the area was under the rule of various dynasties in succession, viz: Maurya, Sunga, Naga, Gupta, Pushyabhuti and Pratihara. The museum was opened for public on 3rd April 1999. The main source of collection for the site museum of Chanderi, are the detached architectural and sculptural members from the ruined temples of Budhi Chanderi, datable to circa 10th to 12th century AD. Apart from the above-mentioned source several objects have been collected from local people, police custody and stray exploration.
