Surya taal (also known as Suraj Taal or the Lake of the Sun God) (el approx 5000 m/16,000 ft) is at the foot of Bara-lacha-la, a high mountain pass connecting Lahaul district in Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir. It is about 2 km downhill from the pass on the Himachal side, just by the side of the highway and is a feast to the eyes for its emerald blue water amidst the snow-capped mountains.
The Bhaga River (a tributary of the Chandrabhaga or Chenab) originates from Suryataal. The other major tributory of the Chandrabhaga, the Chandra originates from the glacier close to the Chandra Taal lake in the Spiti district.
