The Ladakh Festival is an attempt of the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism section to promote the rich heritage of the Ladakh Culture. This is usually done in collaboration with the local communities and the district administrators. The Ladakh Festival is appreciated for its variety and vigor.

In the inauguration ceremony there is a spectacular procession. This is a colourful pageantry in which colourful costumes are worn by the village people and also numerous other groups from different parts of the town. The pageantry is accompanied with cheerful songs and vibrant dances sequences that make the Ladakh Festival more enticing. The traditional orchestra is being played at the background and the grand procession terminates at the Polo Ground.

The Ladakh Festival presents one of the best dance sequences that attract tourists from across the globe. Various programs are held there. Amongst them the Archery Festival is the most interesting. It is practiced in few suburban villages, where it is mandatory or each and every villager to practice the archery according to the pre-assigned guidelines.

It is customary for the male persons to show his skill in the field of Archery with a bow and an arrow. After they start dancing then the female counterparts join hands and also start dancing inside and outside the male circles. Numerous Monasteries at Ladakh contributes to the celebration of a variety of Fairs and Festival there.

Musical concerts are also held in order to rejuvenate the program. Mock marriage ceremonies are among the other interesting feature of the Ladakh festival. Ladakh Festival comprises mainly of the Buddhist ceremony that have a spiritual aspect.

Traditional folk dances known as Chhams are performed by the Lamas who are well equipped with large masks and they dance in tune with the drum beats and long pipes or cymbals. The festival at Ladakh is attended by a group of colourfully dressed people who celebrate it with tremendous zeal and enthusiasm.

Ladakh Festival is a carnival that is yet unsurpassed by any other. The oral literary tradition upheld by the Chhams dance sequence points out the rich traditional heritage of the Indians especially the traditional Buddhists. The Chhams dance includes the dancing of the Buddhist Monks in the form of circles. They wear their respective masks and the festival takes up the vibrant hue of the masked dance.

This Ladakh Festival is also followed by the rich harvest in the fields and flowering of plants which is a good symbol. Tremendous gusto and faith symbolizes the Ladakh Festival. This is because it is generally held to commemorate the birth and the evolution of Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism.
