This pristine, lesser-known beach lying 10 km from Digha calls you for a quiet vacation. Fringed by casuarina plantations, this fishing village offers all the pleasures of a private beach.

Shankarpur, a virgin beach as yet, is a recent discovery. It is a twin beach of Digha, around 10 km. from it. It offers nearly all the pleasures of a private beach. This beach too is cupped with casuarina plantations. Shankarpur is only 14 km. east of Digha, along the Digha-Contai Road. It is also a regular fishing harbour. Shankarpur is now developed as a sea resort with hotels, tourist lodges and other facilities. The attached Matsyagandha Rest House of West Bengal Fisheries Corporation is a pleasant halt, and can be booked from Calcutta. There are numerous private hotels and lodges.

With the mild winter of gangetic West Bengal, the season to visit is on the entire year round. However, the best time of the year is July to March.

10 km from Digha sankarpur has by now established itself as one of the most frequented tourist spot. Dotted with sea resorts, hotels, and tourist lodges and other facilities Sankarpur is now a name to bank upon to enjoy the holidays. How to Reach

By Air

Dumdum airport at Kolkata is the nearest airport which is about 185 km away from Shankarpur.

By Rail

Train is available upto Kharagpur and for the remaining 123 km, hire a bus or a taxi. Though Contai Road (37 km) is the nearest railway station for Digha but Kharagpur and Mechheda on the South-Eastern Railway are the most convenient railheads for Digha from where buses are available which takes 4 hours.

By Road

Buses go to Shankarpur from Dharamtala/Esplanade bus stand, Kolkata. Shankarpur is near Digha and the place can be reached by taking any bus going to Digha. You need to get off at a place called Choddomile or Chaulkhola (14 Miles in Bengali) between Contai and Digha - just before Ramnagar. The sea beach is a 15 minute ride by a car from Choddomile. You need to book a car to pick you up from Choddomile. Otherwise, you can go straight to the Digha Bus stand (a further 25-30min ride) and then hire a cab from there. There is also a direct bus to Shankarpur.

The Champa River has blended with the sea here. There is the Dariapur Lighthouse and the Kapalkundala Temple. Apart from watching fisher men busy with their fishing net all day, sunrise at Shankarpur is also a breathtaking sight.
